Why is Char Dham Yatra important for Hindus?

Let us tell you that two types of Char Dham Yatra are performed in the Hindu religion. One is a trip to Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri and the other is a trip to Badrinath, Jagannath, Rameshwaram and Dwarka Dham. All these holy Dhams are present in different parts of the country, due to which it is also called Bada Char Dham Yatra.

According to Hindu mythology, if a person visits Chardham once in his lifetime, he is freed from all the sins he had committed in his past and attains salvation after death. This strong belief inspires thousands of pilgrims from all over the world to visit Chardham.

In earlier days, it was every parent's dream to have their children take them on a pilgrimage, and it is said that nothing can be as religiously sacred as taking one's parents on a Chardham Yatra. That is why even today people take them on Char Dham Yatra to fulfill the wishes of their parents.

These four pilgrimage sites are in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand surrounded by thick snow and attractive environment. The natural environment, herbs and greenery make everyone disease-free; And meditating at this place prolongs life. This was the reason why our ancient sages (rishi-muni) lived for hundreds of years.

Details of Chardham Yatra in Uttrakhand from Kathmandu.

Many people are not aware of the fact that the Chardham Yatra follows a certain sequence. Chardham Yatra always starts from Yamunotri Dham, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and ends at Badrinath Dham.

Yamunotri Dham Tour Package

Yamunotri Dham is the Dham where devotees visit first in their Chardham Yatra. This Dham is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna who was the daughter of Surya and twin sister of Yama (Yamraj). This Dham is situated on the banks of river Yamuna whose origin is Kalind Parvat. According to mythology – Once on the day of Bhaiya Dooj, Yamraj promised Goddess Yamuna that whoever took a dip in the river would not be taken to Yamalok and thus would attain salvation. this is the reason why Yamunotri Dham comes first among the four Dhams.

People believe that bathing in the holy waters of Yamuna destroys all sins and protects them from untimely and painful death. Due to the place becoming inaccessible during the winter season, the doors of the temple are closed and the idol/symbol of Goddess Yamuna is brought to Kharsali village of Uttarkashi and for the next six months, the idol of Mata Yamunotri is kept in the Shani Dev temple.

Gangotri Dham Tour Package

After Yamunotri, the next major Dham in Chardham Yatra is Gangotri Dham. This temple is dedicated to Goddess Ganga and is situated on the banks of river Bhagirathi in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. River Ganga is the holiest and longest river of India. Gomukh Glacier is the actual source of river Ganga/Bhagirathi which is at a distance of 19 km from Gangotri Temple. Gangotri Dham is said to be the place where Goddess Ganga first descended from heaven after 1000 years of penance by Bhagiratha.

According to legends, Goddess Ganga was ready to come to earth but its intensity was such that the entire earth could submerge under its waters. To save the earth, Lord Shiva held the river Ganga in his hair and released the river Ganga on the earth in the form of a stream and came to be known as the Bhagirathi River. River Ganga got its name at the confluence of Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers in Devprayag.

Every year in winter, on the auspicious occasion of Govardhan Puja, the doors of Gangotri Dham are closed and the icons of Mother Ganga are taken from Gangotri to Panchkedar in Mukhba village of Harsil town and remain there for the next six months.

Kedarnath Dham Tour Package

The third major Dham in Chardham Yatra is Kedarnath Dham. Kedarnath Dham is in the list of 12 Jyotirlingas and is the most important temple in Panch-Kedar. This Dham is situated in the lap of the Himalayas and near the banks of the Mandakini River which is built by Adi-Shankaracharya in 8th AD.

After Diwali, the doors of the temple are closed in winter and the idol of Shiva is taken to Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath and remains in Ukhimath for the next six months.

Badrinath Dham Tour Package

The fourth and last Dham of Chardham Yatra is Badrinath Dham. Badrinath Dham is the most sacred and visited Dham in the sub-continent. More than 10 lakh devotees visit Badrinath temple every year. This temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu which is situated between Nar and Narayan mountains on the banks of Alaknanda River. This is the only Dham that is a part of both Chardham and Chhota Chardham.

Inside the Badrinath temple, there is a 1 meter tall black stone idol of Lord Vishnu surrounded by other deities. It is believed that the idol of Lord Vishnu located here is one of the 8 Swayambhu or self-manifested Kshetra Murti, established by Adi Shankaracharya.
